Field day for junior rangers

The Gazette (Derwent Valley) - - FRONT PAGE - SHAUN McMANUS

SOME students wouldn’t be caught dead wearing their uniform during the school holidays.

That’s not the case for Westerway Primary School students Emma Pritchard and Jazmyn Filliponi, who took time out of their break to represent their school at Mt Field National Park this week.

School principal Andrea Long said it was not hard to convince a group of five students to visit the park as part of the Wilds’ Cool program.

“They’re very keen and enthusiastic, in fact we could have had probably twice as many kids there,” Ms Long said.

Westerway Primary School has been part of the Wilds’ Cool program since last year, under the guidance of teacher Wendy Holdsworth.

Wilds’ Cool junior rangers take part in sustainability activities such as tree plantings and ecological studies at local reserves and parks.

Ms Long said the students had a blast at Mt Field.

“[They had] the chance to talk to the public about their experiences and to interact with the public, that was very good for their selfconfidence,” she said.

“Some of them also went with some of the rangers on an ecology walking tour along the falls. It was a great day.”

School holidays continue until October 16.
