EMOTIONS are set to run high at the inaugural Stan Harrex Memorial Run/Walk at Tynwald Park this Sunday.

Theresa Harrex, of Hayes, is organising the run in remembrance of her father, who was killed in a car accident in May this year.

There will be a 5.35km and a 10.7km course starting and finishing at Tynwald Park and taking in the surrounding tracks.

Stan Harrex was an avid runner, despite only taking it up when he was 50, and was well known in the Derwent Valley.

Theresa said there was already considerable interest in the fun run, and expects it to be an emotional day.

“He organised the Derwent Valley Australia Day fun run for 24 years,” Theresa said

“He was a very big athlete himself, so I just wanted to do something for him to carry on the running tradition and name it as a memorial for him.”

Harrex’s impressive resume included twice taking out the Derwent Valley senior sportsman of the year award, and competing at the World Masters Games in Italy.

Theresa hopes the run, which will be co-hosted by Tasmanian Masters Athletics will become an annual event.

There will be spot prizes and vouchers donated by The Running Edge.

The first three runners across the line in both distances will receive prizes, while the first male and female in the two runs will each receive a trophy.

The run starts at 10am on Sunday, and participants can enter on the day.
