Maydena swimming pool closes

The Gazette (Derwent Valley) - - NEWS -

THE Maydena Community Association has unanimously decided it has no choice but to close the Maydena Swimming Pool due to safety concerns and a lack of funds.

The pool will not open this year, or anytime in the near future.

The association is looking at alternatives for children in the town, such as a free bus to the New Norfolk Swimming Pool at the weekends, with further discussions to be held.

Two separate safety audits have been completed, by the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia and JMG Engineering and Planning, from which the pool received a safety rating of 15 per cent.

About $20,000 would be required to meet basic safety costs, and further funds would be required to meet the full compliance costs.

Even if the association had the money to meet safety requirements this year, there was no guarantee it could continue to meet costs in the future.
