Market in High St makeover

The Gazette (Derwent Valley) - - NEWS -

THE New Norfolk Market will be held at its new location on High St this Saturday.

In a unanimous council vote in September, a two-year campaign to move the market finally materialised for market organiser John Blegg.

The market will incorporate a plant sale, along with more than 30 stalls, food vans, entertainment and displays.

Mr Blegg hoped the market on High St would breathe life back into the town centre.

“I think the centre of the town needs a bit of a lift with all the vacant shops, so I hope it’s a success and it can stimulate a bit more business activity,” he said.

Most of the stalls will be regular and around 10 will be casual, with a different food van each week.

Mr Blegg said he had taken measures to ensure public safety as it is his main concern.

“I’m keeping the footpaths clear and the centre of the street clear for people to walk.”

“The biggest comment I’ve got from the public is that they’d like to see the street closed permanently and turned into a permanent mall so this will be a good trial for that,” Mr Blegg said.

High St will be closed between Charles and Burnett streets.
