Death rul­ing in Oc­to­ber

A HO­BART mag­is­trate will hand down his de­ci­sion in Oc­to­ber on the 2015 death of a Der­went Val­ley cherry or­chard worker.

Reid Fruits, one of Aus­tralia’s big­gest cherry pro­duc­ers, has pleaded not guilty to fail­ing to com­ply with its health and safety duty in the case of a worker who was killed by a trac­tor in 2015.

Retbe Chide Negga, 50, was crushed by a trac­tor on Jan­uary 9, 2015, at an or­chard at Plenty. Mr Negga died in hospi­tal.

Mag­is­trate Reg Mar­ron heard ev­i­dence from Reid Fruits work­ers and man­agers.

Mr Mar­ron gave the pros­e­cu­tion un­til Septem­ber 10 to make sub­mis­sions and the de­fence un­til Septem­ber 14 to re­ply.

He will hand down his de­ci­sion on Oc­to­ber 8.
