Concert band’s tour a success
MEMBERS of the Derwent Valley Concert Band have returned home this week after a 12-day tour of Malaysia.
The band’s 10th overseas tour in its 25-year history saw the group travel through Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Taiping, Penang and Kota Kinabalu for six concerts, including a collaboration with well-known Malaysian singer Mia Palencia.
Conductor Lyall McDermott said the overseas trip was an unforgettable experience for band members.
“The feedback I’ve received from everyone has been really positive,” Mr McDermott said.
“For a number of members, it was their first time overseas, so it’s always nice to hear of what a great time they had.”
Mr McDermott said the band’s final show was a special memory from the tour.
“Our last gig was held at a Malaysian Rotary Club in front of a crowd of 500 people, including the Australian Deputy High Commissioner,” he said.
“We performed in front of guests who were at a formal dinner and the performance was extremely well received and really drew the attention of the crowd.”
The band will now begin fine-tuning its performance ahead of the group’s 25th anniversary concert in October.
“We have the state championships in a couple months’ time, and we’re also preparing for a 25th birthday show at The Friends School,” Mr McDermott said.
