Pontoon takes shape
THE development of New Norfolk’s new multipurpose pontoon is taking shape after the first stage of the project was completed earlier this month.
Once finished the new 70m long pontoon will be more than three times the length of the previous pontoon at the New Norfolk Esplanade.
Derwent Valley Mayor Martyn Evans said the local project, which received State Government funding, would be a well-enjoyed community asset.
“This is a very exciting project which is tracking along extremely well,” Cr Evans said.
“The State Government’s support of $300,000 has gone a long way. There’s no doubt the pontoon will provide a true water frontage for people to converge on.”
Tasmanian rowing stalwart Neil Stump said the new pontoon would be fantastic for the New Norfolk rowing club once complete.
“It will certainly be big a boost for the club,” he said.
“There’s an element of danger for the club’s rowers at the moment with having to cross the road to put boats in the water. So I think the new pontoon will be great for them.”
Cr Evans said the council was exploring the “next steps” for engaging more activities at the Esplanade.
