Valley concert band celebrates 25 years
THE Derwent Valley Concert Band is polishing up for a performance to mark 25 years since the band’s formation.
Five ensembles, including the Brass Quintet, Marching Band, and Development Band along with the Intermediate Band and the Concert Band will take the stage at the Friends School’s Farrall Centre this Saturday for the concert.
Conductor Lyall McDermott said the performance, hosted by 2009 Young Australian of the Year Sam Cawthorn, would be a great way to commemorate the band’s past.
“The program has been built around various high points in the band’s history,” Mr McDermott said.
“The event will commemorate the very first public performance in 1993, the international tours the band has gone on, the Danish royal wedding, and the number of state and national competitions the band has entered.”
DVCB founding conductor Layton Hodgetts will return to the podium on Saturday to conduct pieces with the Intermediate and Concert bands.
Mr McDermott said he was looking forward to presenting a piece the band developed for its recent trip to Malaysia.
“A particular highlight will be the Australian premiere of Mia Palencia’s song cycle Pengertian Suite,” he said.
The concert begins at 7pm and entry is by donation with refreshments provided.
