FOR THOSE ABOUT TO COMMIT A CLIMB, WE SALUTE YOU
DIRECTOR: JENNIFER PEEDOM (SHERPA)
STARRING: WILLEM DAFOE (NARRATOR)
Acclaimed Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedom follows her compelling 2015 documentary Sherpa by yet again returning to high altitude.
However, the magnificent Mountain could not be any more different from its predecessor. For starters, it is not a doco in any shape or form.
This unique cinematic experience is best described as a simple, yet spectacular meditation upon mankind’s relationship with mountains.
Sure, that sounds like an open invitation to watch paint dry. But just wait until you see what hits the canvas of the big screen.
You won’t be able to avert your gaze for a second.
Peedom has amassed a mesmerising collection of footage taken on, above and around peaks all over the world.
There must be at least 50 individual camera shots in Mountain (a majority of which involve the use of aerial drones or well-positioned GoPros) that can be easily slotted into the category of jaw-dropping.
The free-form exploits of climbers are to the fore, of course. But so too are those of bike riders, hikers, guides, mystics and even tightrope walkers. Tagging any of these shots with the descriptor of “bird’s eye view” is utterly inadequate.
Simply getting your head around how any of these lyrical camera moves were achieved is more than enough to force surrender to Mountain’s pure majesty. Just as crucial to the film’s success is the superb editing that knits together multiple locations, subjects and perspectives without a single stumble.
The feeling that any one mountain can be many things to many different people comes through mighty powerfully indeed.
Further elevating the high sensory immersion of viewers is the directly emotive musical accompaniment of the Australian Chamber Orchestra (and the occasional narration of actor Willem Dafoe).
See this absolute breath-taker on the biggest screen you can find. And be sure to bring your own back-up supply of oxygen.
