One night, big wave, hero surfer
SURF documentary Night Rider charts the remarkable achievement of young Queensland adventure athlete and big-wave surfer Mark Visser, the first person to ride the infamous Jaws break, in Maui, at night. Sunshine Coast-based Visser trained with navy Seals to give him his best chance of survival in the advent of a catastrophic wipeout. Visser is able to hold his breath for six minutes. After a severe ‘‘hold-down’’ as deep as 15m under water, he can work out which way is up by releasing some air and feeling the direction the bubbles travel. In January this year, Visser made history by achieving a night ride on 10-12m waves at Jaws – a true world first, known globally as the ‘‘Night Rider’’. Unmissable viewing for surf fans, the Night Rider film is proof positive Visser is one of the gutsiest surfers in the world. The film screens on the Coast for one night only – on Wednesday, November 23.
Night Rider screens at Coolangatta and Pacific Fair cinemas on Wednesday.
