New Year’s concert strikes a chord
MULTICULTURAL broadcaster SBS will opt for tradition when it broadcasts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Day Concert. Musicians will perform the lively music of Strauss and his contemporaries. These concerts delight the audience in the Musikverein, Vienna, and are televised to about 50 million viewers in more than 70 countries. First performed in 1939, during a dark period of Austria’s history, these concerts were conceived for a local audience as a reminder of better times and a source of hope for the future. This year’s concert will be conducted by Latvian maestro Mariss Jansons, who last conducted the orchestra in 2006.
