Flood survivors tell their stories
Queensland marks the first anniversary of devastating flooding with personal recounts
MEATWORKER Edward Spark spent a horrifying 45 minutes clinging to a tree as a wall of water tore through Toowoomba on January 10.
The 23-year-old watched as cars, trees and parts of buildings were swept away and prayed he wouldn’t be next.
‘‘I think God was on my side at that time,’’ he told the Queensland flood inquiry some months later, recalling how a van hurtled towards him in the wall of water.
‘‘I was thinking that the tree would go and I’d never be seen after that.’’
Spark was with a friend when the floods hit. The friend got to higher ground, but Spark had to wait for a rescue team.
He recalls his near miss in the first episode of I Survived: Stories of Australians, on pay-tv’s Bio channel on Wednesday.
Free TV channels will feature anniversary reports on news and current affairs shows with both Channels 7 and 9 to air special Queensland flood anniversary specials on the weekend.
A pay-tv National Geo channel special, featuring footage gathered by ordinary Queenslanders who were stranded as flooding affected the state, will air on Sunday week.
