Songs to stir passions

Gold Coast City Choir (pictured) will add a special touch to Good Friday, performing An Easter Story in Song at Mudgeeraba. Directed by Ruth Gurner (in blue, above), a former international and Australian opera singer, the one-hour show tells a story of the passion of Christ. ‘‘I have staged it and we have done it a couple of times,’’ Gurner says. ‘‘It’s a lovely story that is very moving. We have some wonderful voices in the choir, and there will be solos, duets and trios.’’ The first item – Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria – is the most popular piece of sacred music by the celebrated 18th century composer. ‘‘This music has been cherished for over 200 years and will be loved for all time. Vivaldi’s Gloria will stir every emotion in your being,’’ Gurner says. She says the second piece, titled I Remember, is a beautiful cantata that was composed by the Gold Coast’s own Leon Powrie. ‘‘A cantata is a vocal composition, usually sacred-texted, typically of several movements with instrumental accompaniment and choir,’’ Gurner says. ‘‘It’s a very special show and we are hoping to get a nice crowd along. It’s an appealing and an uplifting story.’’

Gold Coast City Choir performs at Church Good Shepherd, 4 Tarrant Drive, Mudgeeraba, tomorrow (Good Friday) at 8.30am.
