Sisters rock as one
(pictured) are not letting their age get in the way of playing beautiful vintage rock music. The all-sister rockband of Holly, Sarah, Hannah and Amy Findlay are making a name for themselves on the international music scene, with Holly the youngest at just 14. The four-piece made their mark on the industry when they took out the crown for youth radio station Triple J’s Unearthed High Competition in 2010, a feat that saw Stonefield grace the stage at Glastonbury the following year. Guitarist Hannah says winning Unearthed has lead to many great experiences. ‘‘It was the start of a lot of things that happened to us, our songs started getting airplay and more people knew about our music,’’ she says. ‘‘We were asked to play One Movement Festival in Perth, and a booker for Glastonbury liked our sound and invited us to play. It was so surreal. Playing Glastonbury was very different for us, we were just in a small van when heaps of other bands had tour buses. A couple of technical things went wrong but it was awesome, we had a great crowd response.’’ Influenced by bands like Led Zeppelin and Frank Zappa, the sisters first picked up instruments six years ago. ‘‘Holly was seven when she started learning bass,’’ says Hannah. ‘‘Our parents don’t play instruments but there was always music playing in the house. We have a lot of influences from older bands.’’ Hannah says their sound has progressed in the right direction in the six years they have been playing. ‘‘Our originals were very different when we first started, they were quite heavier,’’ she says. ‘‘We have had more experience in writing, and we have found a style we are more suited to which we love.’’ Releasing a well-received debut EP Through The Clover in 2010, Hannah says Stonefield recently finished recording a new sixtrack EP, and have plans to record an album later this year. ‘‘We want to keep on improvising and improving, but I think we will be ready to make a record by then,’’ says Hannah.
