Cop drama has a killer plot
network HBO has ordered a new series called True Detective, which teams Matthew Mcconaughey and Woody Harrelson (pictured), working together again for the first time since the 1990s movie ED-TV. The high-concept cop drama is penned by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunaga ( Jane Eyre). True Detective sparked a bidding war when it was shopped to US networks this month. Its makers describe it as an elevated serial narrative with multiple perspectives and time frames. It follows detectives Rust Cohle (Mcconaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives entwine during a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. The investigation of a bizarre 1995 murder is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case reopens. The eight-episode first season will resolve its mystery. Subsequent seasons could use the same structure but new characters and story.
