Movie of the Week 8.30pm, ABC2
M. 1955. Charles Laughton’s sole directorial contribution was this chilling, nightmarish tale of two children being pursued by psychopathic preacher Robert Mitchum, who has killed their mother. He coaxes a stunning performance from Mitchum in this masterpiece. Also stars Shelley Winters. 8.45pm, Seven, Prime7
M. 2009. Flat tyre entry in the F&F franchise with Vin Diesel, the underground racer, and Paul Walker, the muscle car-fancying FBI agent, joining forces to bring down a drug smuggler. After a smash opening, the plot goes into neutral, in need of dramatic hot wiring. Diesel is largely wasted and the story is as authentic as the inevitable video game. 9.15pm, SBS ONE
M. 2007. Sister Nicole Kidman arrives at the family home for Jennifer Jason Leigh’s marriage, bringing with her insults and gratuitous criticisms for all and sundry, including her own son. Words are weapons in this film and it plays like a war movie with Kidman in the Schwarzenneger role. These are not likeable people, but try taking your eyes off them. 10pm, ABC2
PG. 1956. Humphrey Bogart’s last film and it’s a beaut! He’s totally believable as a hard-bitten boxing writer, down on his luck, who’s hired by crooked syndicate boss Rod Steiger to promote a new fighter. The devious wheeling and dealing becomes too much and he aims to bust the syndicate. One of Bogie’s best.
