Creative life of Coast captured
DOCUMENTARY that chronicles the Gold Coast’s nascent cultural scene screens tonight at the Rabbit & Cocoon art space in Miami. Kicking Off the White Shoes features interviews with 13 emerging artists and cultural practitioners from the Coast as they narrate the rise of the city’s artistic tide. Director Jeff Licence will host the screening and participate in a Q&A. ‘‘I just got a bit sick of hearing the Coast stereotyped as this place of just development and tourism, or crime and schoolies,’’ says Licence, who started filming three years ago. ‘‘And yet I knew all these amazing people, particularly working in arts, sustainability, culture and community. I just thought it would be nice to share their stories too.’’ The film premiered at this year’s Gold Coast Film Festival and Licence is already selling copies on DVD. He’s keeping interest bubbling with community screenings and will next put the film on at Bond University in September, along with a panel discussion. Response to Kicking Off the White Shoes has also encouraged the educator and filmmaker to dig for more stories within the Gold Coast’s cultural sphere; he’s now got two more arts-based film projects in the pipeline. ‘‘I’m blown away, the community is behind it,’’ he says. ‘‘The best thing is that the film has now become the foundation for other stories to be told about artistic and cultural practice on the Coast.’’ Rabbit + Cocoon is a new, artist-run creative industries space at Miami that provides resources and support for the production and presentation of arts projects.
