Dream run for Conal
performer Conal Coad stars in Opera Australia’s lavish production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which opens at the Lyric Theatre, at QPAC, in Brisbane, tomorrow night. Based on Baz Luhrmann’s India-inspired version of the Shakespearean classic, the production stars Coad as Bottom and Tyler Coppin as Puck, with an outstanding cast including Tobias Cole as Oberon and Lorina Gore as Titania. Jud Arthur and Jacqueline Dark are Theseus and Hippolyta, with James Egglestone, Luke Gabbedy, Jane Parkin and Sian Pendry as the lovers. ‘‘It’s a dream come true,’’ Opera Australia artistic director Lyndon Terracini says of the Brisbane season. ‘‘Since I took on the role of artistic director of Opera Australia I have been determined to bring Australia’s national opera company to Brisbane. This production is a wonderful demonstration of where this amazing art form can take you.’’ The story begins with a feud between fairies – Titania is besotted with a young Indian prince and Oberon plans his humiliating revenge, conjuring a web of enchantment. When a merry band of mortals wander into the fairies’ domain, Oberon discovers more enchantment than he imagined. Film and theatre director Luhrmann and designers Catherine Martin and Bill Marron created the production in 1993. After triumphant seasons in Sydney and Melbourne, the production went on to win the Critics’ Prize at the Edinburgh Festival and is now a much-loved part of Opera Australia’s repertoire. Director Julie Edwardson is restaging it for its first-time season in Brisbane. The production runs alongside Opera Australia’s season of The Magic Flute in the Lyric Theatre.
