Train tale spins a web

Series puts real-life horror on our doorstep, writes

THE director of Australian horror film The Tunnel , Carlo Ledesma, says his latest collaboration contains a much more realistic terror.

Ledesma is directing three of the seven episodes in the Event Zero web series, which was cowritten and produced by Enzo Tedeschi and Julian Harvey.

The pair were awarded $100,000 to make the series, after the idea won the Movie Extra Webfest 2.0 competition.

The story revolves around a train derailment in Sydney. When emergency workers arrive at the wreckage, they realise it’s the least of their problems, as people without a scratch begin dying.

Ledesma says this one is more of a thriller, because there’s no supernatural creature like in The Tunnel.

‘‘The horror is more realistic in the sense that it starts out as an accident,’’ he says, but they realise it’s even more horrific, when it turns out to be a dangerous virus.

‘‘(It’s) a lot more grounded in reality because we live in a day and age where something like that could very plausibly happen.’’

The first episode premiered on YouTube in May, with six more on the way.

Visiting the set of episode two, The Ambulance Team, at a warehouse in Sydney’s Liverpool, there’s an ambulance parked off to the side and a very ill looking actor eating his lunch.

Ledesma explains he is in full-make up and will be playing the infected train crash survivor.

‘‘What happens here is a group of young paramedics take in train crash survivors and they think it’s nothing serious,’’ he says.

But when one of them starts showing signs of a strange sickness, they realise it could be worse

A scene from the spooky new series than they thought. The idea was born after Tedeschi watched a documentary about the horrific Tokyo Sarin attacks, when a doomsday cult attacked the subway system with the nerve gas sarin in 1995, killing 13 people and injuring more than 6000.

Harvey says they just saw there was so many layers to the story of the Tokyo Sarin attacks.

So Event Zero is a single event, but each of the seven episodes follows a different character.

The web series stars Australian actors including Zoe Carides ( Crownies), Valentino Del Toro ( Gabriel, Underbelly: Infiltration), Harry Pavlidis ( Gabriel, East West 101, All Saints) and Steve Davis ( The Tunnel).

Aside from Ledesma, episodes have also been directed by Andrew Traucki ( The Reef) and Shane Abbess ( Gabriel).
