Sci-fi scoops box office bonanza
Ridley Scott’s return to the world of Alien, Prometheus, held on to the top spot at the Australian box office for the second week in a row. The sci-fi feature raked in more than $3.01 million – more than double its nearest competitor, Adam Sandler’s latest comedy That’s My Boy, which took $1.43m in its first week. Tom Cruise’s Rock of Ages was third, only just managing to outsell last weekend’s No. 2 film, Men in Black III. The new movies in the mix also pushed the rest of the top six two places, with ensemble comedy What To Expect When You’re Expecting in fifth place and The Avengers in sixth – but it’s worth noting the superhero film has racked up more than $52.3m in eight weeks on Australian screens. Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest comedy, The Dictator, fell from fifth to seventh place, Friends with Kids dropped from sixth to eighth and Canadian comedy Take This Waltz debuted in ninth position. Rounding out the Top Ten was Tim Burton’s latest offering, Dark Shadows.
