Winning look has some restrictions
A transformation is definitely in Melissa Bergland’s future, writes Darren Cartwright
WINNERS and Losers star Melissa Bergland says she’s a bit cartoonish for her own liking and wants to change her look to avoid being typecast.
The effervescent actor, who recently won the Most Popular New Female Talent Logie, says when the time is right she will change her physical appearance so she’s more appealing to casting agents and directors.
Though Bergland says it is unlikely any major changes will happen until her role as Jenny Gross on Channel 7’s Winners and Losers comes to an end.
‘‘The look I have to maintain for the show means I am not physically and visually right for a lot of jobs,’’ Bergland says.
‘‘After the life of Winners and Losers and the show has died a natural death – I don’t want it to stop any time soon and I hope it goes to a fifth and sixth season, but once that part of my life is done I will endeavour to look different and get rid of the red hair.
‘‘I’m a bit cartoonish and I am very animated and I have a very striking look, which doesn’t make me much of a chameleon.’’
In regard to her Logies win in April, Bergland says she is honoured but admits she hasn’t seen a financial windfall as yet.
She still drives a ‘‘beat-up’’ car and admits to taking out a loan between the first and second series of Winners and
Losers to pay her rent. Bergland says there’s a misconception within the industry and some friends that because she’s on television and a Logie winner she must be raking in the money.
‘‘The popular misconception is that you’re earning a lot of money – and sometimes the worst culprits of this are within the industry,’’ she says.
‘‘I can’t afford to live by myself – I live with two other people, I drive a ’99 Daihatsu Sirion with paint chips, that needs the fan belt fixed and does not even have central locking.
‘‘Because I got paid for six months and that pay has to last you 12 months . . . I took out a loan to pay my rent.’’ A second season of Winners
and Losers is in the can. A third season depends on season two’s ratings, says Bergland.
