‘Intersex’ runner caught in centre of storm
Too Fast to Be a Woman? tells the dramatic story behind Caster Semenya (pictured), the champion South African runner who was alleged to be intersex. In 2009, Semenya, an unknown 18-year-old from a humble township, rocketed to fame by becoming the 800m champion at the World Athletic Championships. Questions were raised about Semenya’s gender, and Caster took the fight to the International Association of Athletics Federations. As lawyers and scientists argued the issue the shy young woman only wanted to run.
