Timely way to show off
attention spans shrinking, 10 plays which go for 10 minutes each guarantee a short night at the theatre that really packs a punch. In its fourth year in Queensland, the world’s largest 10 minute play festival Short+Sweet is back and will host 30 writers, 20 directors, 12 independent theatre companies and 100 actors at locations around southeast Queensland. The Arts Centre Gold Coast will host the Gold Coast leg and will feature 10 plays over four days giving budding playwrights the chance to see their work on stage. The festival also showcases the best emerging actors, directors and local independent theatre companies and this year presented its 1000th new Australian work. It is also focused on uncovering and developing new writers. Festival director Sean Dennehy says this is just the start. ‘‘We have great creative communities south, north and west of Brisbane and this festival is the type of thing to bring them all together,’’ he says. Now in its 11th year, the biggest little play festival began in the late 90s and became Short+Sweet in 2001. The Short+Sweet franchise has expanded to Sydney, Canberra, central NSW, Brisbane, Melbourne, Rockhampton and Newcastle and has an international program in Singapore, Malaysia, Taipei, Auckland, Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai.
