at­ten­tion spans shrink­ing, 10 plays which go for 10 min­utes each guar­an­tee a short night at the the­atre that re­ally packs a punch. In its fourth year in Queens­land, the world’s largest 10 minute play fes­ti­val Short+Sweet is back and will host 30 writ­ers, 20 di­rec­tors, 12 in­de­pen­dent the­atre com­pa­nies and 100 ac­tors at lo­ca­tions around south­east Queens­land. The Arts Cen­tre Gold Coast will host the Gold Coast leg and will fea­ture 10 plays over four days giv­ing bud­ding play­wrights the chance to see their work on stage. The fes­ti­val also show­cases the best emerg­ing ac­tors, di­rec­tors and lo­cal in­de­pen­dent the­atre com­pa­nies and this year pre­sented its 1000th new Aus­tralian work. It is also fo­cused on un­cov­er­ing and de­vel­op­ing new writ­ers. Fes­ti­val di­rec­tor Sean Den­nehy says this is just the start. ‘‘We have great cre­ative com­mu­ni­ties south, north and west of Bris­bane and this fes­ti­val is the type of thing to bring them all to­gether,’’ he says. Now in its 11th year, the big­gest lit­tle play fes­ti­val be­gan in the late 90s and be­came Short+Sweet in 2001. The Short+Sweet fran­chise has ex­panded to Sydney, Canberra, cen­tral NSW, Bris­bane, Mel­bourne, Rock­hamp­ton and New­cas­tle and has an in­ter­na­tional pro­gram in Sin­ga­pore, Malaysia, Taipei, Auck­land, Delhi, Chen­nai and Mum­bai.
