Stars brace for cricketing hit
Tells the story behind Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket, writes
RENDAN Cowell, Damon Gameau and Lachy Hulme have been living their boyhood dreams.
Starring in Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War has allowed Cowell and Gameau to play their childhood cricket heroes – Rod Marsh and Greg Chappell. Hulme, who plays Kerry Packer, fulfilled his fantasy of being paid to eat McDonald’s.
To get into character, Hulme stacked on weight and indulged in Packer’s favourite food – the Quarter Pounder.
‘‘It took me a long time to figure out what kind of man Mr Packer was,’’ Hulme says.
‘‘The general impression of him, I think, is that he was just a tyrant and a bully, a rich man who took what he wanted and did what he wanted.
‘‘I now know that that’s a horribly simplistic view of a very complicated man.’’
The production, which follows Packer’s bid to establish World Series Cricket, has been made by John Edwards, the man behind TV success stories Offspring, Tangle, Love My Way and Rush.
Gameau says Howzat! dramatised a ‘‘rich, dramatic moment in Australian sporting history’’. ‘‘America is full of these stories, but we have only a few, so it is great to capture it on film,’’ he says. ‘‘This was an era of huge personalities and full-bore
larrikinism. It is ready-made for television.’’
Coming soon, Nine, NBN.
