A tele­movie on the Wik­ileaks founder’s teen ca­reer will pre­miere at Toronto’s Film Fes­ti­val

UN­DER­GROUND, the Chan­nel 10 tele­movie that chron­i­cles Wik­iLeaks founder Ju­lian As­sange’s teen ca­reer as a com­puter hacker in 1980s Mel­bourne, will have its world pre­miere in the con­tem­po­rary world cinema sec­tion of the Toronto In­ter­na­tional Film Fes­ti­val, dead­­re­ports.

New­comer Alex Wil­liams, 21, plays As­sange. Aus­tralian ac­tress Rachel Grif­fiths ( Broth­ers & Sis­ters) plays his mother. Laura Wheel­wright ( An­i­mal King­dom, Win­ners & Losers) plays his girl­friend.

Writ­ten and di­rected by Robert Con­nolly, the project is based on the 1997 novel Un­der­ground: Tales of Hack­ing, Mad­ness and Ob­ses­sion on the Elec­tronic Fron­tier by Suelette Drey­fus, who col­lab­o­rated with As­sange, who is fight­ing ex­tra­di­tion from Lon­don to Swe­den on sex crimes al­le­ga­tions.

Un­der­ground is one of sev­eral projects about As­sange in the pipe­line.
