Behind the scenes of Assange
A telemovie on the Wikileaks founder’s teen career will premiere at Toronto’s Film Festival
UNDERGROUND, the Channel 10 telemovie that chronicles WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s teen career as a computer hacker in 1980s Melbourne, will have its world premiere in the contemporary world cinema section of the Toronto International Film Festival, deadline.comreports.
Newcomer Alex Williams, 21, plays Assange. Australian actress Rachel Griffiths ( Brothers & Sisters) plays his mother. Laura Wheelwright ( Animal Kingdom, Winners & Losers) plays his girlfriend.
Written and directed by Robert Connolly, the project is based on the 1997 novel Underground: Tales of Hacking, Madness and Obsession on the Electronic Frontier by Suelette Dreyfus, who collaborated with Assange, who is fighting extradition from London to Sweden on sex crimes allegations.
Underground is one of several projects about Assange in the pipeline.
