CRAZY FOR THE COAST
PJ Hogan premieres Mental
and its sequel. It didn’t look like a follow-up to the 2004 hit would eventuate until Ferrell, who stars as newsman Ron Burgundy (pictured), appeared in character on Conan O’Brien’s TV show in March to confirm the good news. Ferrell, who plays a politician vying for a seat in Congress in The Campaign, has reteamed with Anchorman director and co-writer Adam McKay to work on a screenplay for the sequel. He says the eight-year gap between films has given them more freedom to write about San Diego’s top journalist. ‘‘That’s the beauty of getting to do a sequel where there’s been distance between the original one. We’re really starting with a blank slate and . . . we don’t necessarily have to pick up where the first one left off,’’ he says. ‘‘We can kind of take some liberty to create a whole new story.’’ Ferrell says they’re not feeling pressure yet about the highly-anticipated film, ‘‘but we will’’. ‘‘There will be a point, where we’re like, ‘this is actually going to happen’.’’
Ferrell, who stars in current big-screen comedy hit The Campaign, is glad there was so much time between making the cult classic Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
is screening now.
