graduate and local theatre star Tyler Burness will return to the Gold Coast to perform in Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years – the debut production for new local theatre company Golden Apple Theatrical Productions. GATP has been developed by local drama teacher, director and multiple Gold Coast Area Theatre Award winner Cilla Scott, who taught Burness as a budding young actor. ‘‘I was Tyler’s drama teacher more than 10 years ago and it carries such a special significance for me that after he has trained at such an elite level we will again have the chance to work together,’’ she says. The Last Five Years, which has yet to be fully cast, explores a five-year relationship between rising novelist Jamie, played by Burness, and Cathy Hyatt, a struggling actress. The story is told in reverse chronological order, beginning at the end of the marriage, and at the same time is told in chronological order, starting just after the couple have first met. Auditions for the remaining roles will be held at The Arts Centre Gold Coast on October 13 by appointment only. The newly-formed, independent theatre company will focus on locally-produced, smaller-scale musicals. Scott formed GATP after recognising a need for high-quality productions of contemporary local and international theatrical work. ‘‘I see the Gold Coast as an already vibrant cultural community and I am excited to contribute to the ongoing promotion, development and growth of the locally-produced theatre scene,’’ she says. ‘‘We as a region have so much to offer. We want to support local and emerging artists.’’
