clubbing: Teens make giant strides for EP launch ............
of saving money to travel the world or pay for their university studies like many teenagers, The Jungle Giants worked several jobs to fund their first EP. The teens – who are finally legally allowed to play in pubs now that they are all aged 18 and over – had never played a show before gaining national attention earlier this year with their debut single Mr Polite. Cesira Aitken, Sam Hales, Keelan Bijker and Andrew Dooris have toured nationally with fellow Bris-band The Medics, played sold-out boutique music event Track & Field with Ball Park Music and Last Dinosaurs and opened for Boy & Bear on their sold-out tour. The Jungle Giants are now back on the road for their first headlining tour to celebrate the release of their EP, She’s A Riot, with a Gold Coast show at Elsewhere tomorrow night. A collection of songs put together during the past 12 months, She’s A Riot features vocalist Hales’s tales of the band’s adventures and the woes of love, life and relationships. ‘‘We learnt a lot on the tour with Boy & Bear,’’ he says. ‘‘We’d often just jam out some songs and I would show what I was working on and they’d give me really good feedback. I found I really matured not only as a performer, but as a songwriter. We’ve grown up a lot since we first started back in high school so it’s really awesome to be going on our first headline tour.’’ Hales says songwriting is ‘‘a chance to get those emotions out’’. ‘‘I guess I am lucky I have that outlet, to turn those kind of good and bad situations into something creative. I try to encompass everything – the good and bad sides of relationships. I just find those kinds of things are the most relatable to people and something I want to write about. Everyone has experienced that roller-coaster of falling in and out of love and all the things that come with it.’’ The Jungle Giants will be joined on tour by Sydney duo Toucan.
The Jungle Giants and Toucan play Elsewhere, in Surfers Paradise, tomorrow night.
