A-list of action
loaded with ageing action stars flexing and fighting in a blaze of bullets and ear-splitting explosions – The Expendables 2 is a raucous, rollicking movie ride. It’s all good, testosterone-fuelled fun as Sylvester Stallone leads a wisecracking crew of mercenaries, whose ranks include Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris. The exception to the rule is, of course, Liam Hemsworth, who plays new recruit Bill the Kid. ‘‘Everyone’s trying to stand in front of each other, so it’s a bit of fighting for the camera,’’ Statham says. Revenge is the motivating force as the team exacts payback for the death of one of its own. Statham says mixed martial arts champion Randy Couture emerges as the toughest of the tough guys. ‘‘He’s the real deal,’’ he says. ‘‘He could wipe the floor with almost anyone there and all at the same time.’’ Often described as the action odd couple, Statham shares an easy on-screen banter and off-screen friendship with Stallone. ‘‘He’s very much a comical chap,’’ Statham says. ‘‘It’s just in his DNA to be funny.’’ Stallone and Richard Wenk’s script is peppered with self-deprecating humour. In one classic exchange, Stallone looks at an old plane and says: ‘‘That thing belongs in a museum.’’ Schwarzenegger looks at Willis and quips: ‘‘We all do.’’
Terry Crews, Sylvester Stallone, Randy Couture and Dolph Lundgren return.
