A gig for the real fans
celebrate 15 years of live shows, English indie-rock band Gomez are letting their fans choose the setlist for their Quincenera tour. With seven albums’ worth of tracks to choose from, Gold Coast fans have the chance to hear their favourite Gomez songs by voting for their five top picks online. Gomez will serenade Coolangatta Hotel with the songs that receive the most votes. Singer and guitarist Ian Ball says the result for most cities is a hit-filled set. ‘‘It’s kind of interesting, I can guess what people are going to pick,’’ he says. ‘‘You find that most nights the top 10 choices are exactly the same, they are the straight up singles. I was surprised at that. But looking over the list some nights, there are songs we haven’t played forever, songs we forgot we wrote. We play all the songs that people want to hear.’’ Distinguished by having three singers and four songwriters, the five-piece are based across the UK and US, which means making new music is like a ‘‘long distance writing relationship’’. ‘‘It makes it difficult being apart. We haven’t had time to go into a studio environment for a while,’’ Ball says. ‘‘A new record will most likely start out with emailing songs. We had so much fun doing that will the last album, it was a blast. By the time we got together, we were very efficient. There was no hanging around the studio tossing up ideas, we knew what we were doing.’’ Gomez first toured Australia in 2000 and have been back several times to celebrate new releases. This time, Ball says they look forward to going ‘‘off the beaten track’’. ‘‘We are playing gigs in Cairns, Townsville and Darwin, which is pretty cool, none of us have been there and we are all keen to see what they are like,’’ he says. ‘‘The only problem is massive distances, so we don’t get to do much sightseeing – other than the gig and the airport.’’
