Barkin blocks Twitter’s bullying twits

Ellen Barkin (pictured) says the only way to deal with Twitter trolls is to block them. Barkin, who appears in Channel 10’s new series The New Normal, is a prolific tweeter with more than 115,000 followers. She’s quickly learnt that follower does not always mean a friend or fan. She says her Twitter page is now on private and she has become used to blocking trolls and biting her Twitter tongue. ‘‘What is dispiriting (about Twitter) is the flood of hate,’’ says Barkin. ‘‘I used to leave my Twitter feed open but then I thought ‘well this is just too ugly’ and I started blocking every idiot who had nothing to say.’’ The star says people who lead a public life have to be thick-skinned and be wise enough not to get caught in a social media shoot-out with cyber bullies. It’s a scenario that local celebrity Charlotte Dawson knows only too well. The TV personality and former model has now deleted her Twitter account, after being the subject of continuous attacks by cyber bullies.
