Art pro­grams just for kids

Arts Cen­tre Gold Coast will un­veil their 2013 Youth Pro­gram to­mor­row night, in­clud­ing the chil­dren’s se­ries, youth se­ries, Mad Camp Sum­mer Edition work­shops and more. As part of the chil­dren’s se­ries, all three shows have been adapted from well-known and loved chil­dren’s books. Fe­bru­ary fea­tures a re­turn sea­son of The Surfer and the Mer­maid, a pow­er­ful piece of con­tem­po­rary the­atre about a boy who loves to surf and his ad­ven­tures be­low the ocean’s sur­face. May by Room on the Broom is a mu­si­cal adaptation of the book by au­thor Ju­lia Donaldson while the third of­fer­ing is Emily Eyefin­ger, fea­tur­ing an ad­ven­tur­ous hero­ine. Lo­cal youth ac­tors will get the chance to en­gage with pho­tog­ra­phy, art exhibitions, drama and the­atre in­clud­ing An­i­mal Farm and The Com­edy of Er­rors, pre­sented by Bell Shake­speare. Mad Camp Sum­mer Edition – for ‘‘arts mad’’ kids aged 10 to 15 years – will be held in the Jan­uary school hol­i­days. In other Arts Cen­tre news, the award-win­ning, sur­re­al­ist com­edy Chas­ing the Whale, di­rected by Jes­sica West­head and pro­duced by Soap­box The­atre as part of the venue’s Artist in Res­i­dence pro­gram, opens next Thurs­day for a sea­son that con­tin­ues un­til Novem­ber 10.
