Magic of Messiah
be some singing, dancing and a whole lot of Christmas cheer when the Gold Coast City Choir brings Handel’s Messiah to life on Sunday. Messiah – arguably the most popular oratorio ever written – tells the story of the birth of Christ and is performed the world over to herald Christmas. Gold Coast City Choir director and acclaimed mezzo soprano Ruth Gurner says audiences should prepare to be ‘‘astounded and uplifted by the superb work’’. ‘‘Many musicians consider Handel’s Messiah to be the finest choral composition ever written,’’ she says. ‘‘Every year, all around the world, Handel’s Messiah – from which the mighty Hallelujah Chorus is so often used in TV advertisements and on the radio – is performed heralding Christmas. In Brisbane, it is performed annually by the major choirs and here on the Gold Coast our choir always gives a performance every Christmas. We are the only major traditional choral group on the Coast able to perform this magnificent oratorio full of wonderful choruses and solo pieces telling the story of Christ.’’ Formed in 1969, the 60-voice Gold Coast City Choir is the largest mixed-voice community choir in the region. It stages major concerts at Easter, mid-year and Christmas and performs at Anzac Day and other civic events, hosts workshops and raises funds for charities.
