Seven pay-tv channels could be turned off
Hollywood-owned pay-TV movie channels could disappear from the air in Australia on January 1. Online magazine Deadline.com says the contract between The Movie Networks (TMN) and Foxtel expires at the end of this year. TMN is owned by Warner Bros, Disney, MGM and Australia’s Village Roadshow. But Deadline says Foxtel is trying to use its muscle to buy films directly from each studio, thereby cutting out the middleman. The TMN studios are reportedly presenting a united front. Deadline says it is possible Foxtel will offer to extend TMN’s contract, for a few months at least, while negotiations continue. Alternatively, TMN could exercise an option to extend for one year a separate deal with Austar.
