Star spreads wings
theatre veteran and school teacher John Arthars is preparing to leave the Gold Coast to travel Australia before he moves overseas. Arthars, one of the stars of Gold Coast Little Theatre’s current season of
has directed and starred in a string of local productions over the years and served as a judge for the Gold Coast Area Theatre Awards. He was a standout earlier this year in GCLT’s ambitious Stuart Lumsden-directed hit Cosi and directed The Actor’s Nightmare in July as part of GCLT’s Kaleidoscope One Act Play Season. Arthars says he is looking forward to visiting friends before he moves to South Korea in August 2013. He also plans to finish a play he is co-writing before he flies out and will travel to Melbourne to work on a twohander written recently for him and another actor. ‘‘I have itchy feet,’’ he says. ‘‘I want to live in another country, partly just for fun and partly to get a clearer understanding of Australia and myself. Now that I’ve started writing dialogue, I’d like to understand better where my thinking comes from and see Australian life from a different viewpoint, which I hope will make me a better writer.’’ Arthars, who will teach senior English in an American international school in South Korea, says he hopes his travels will help him become a better teacher.
