Lively day with Charlie Brown

The Gold Coast Bulletin - Play Magazine - - SHOWS -

from Charles Schultz’s Peanuts comic strip including Charlie Brown, Snoopy and Linus will be brought to life in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Ballina Players’ January youth musical. The show opens with Sally saying helpfully: ‘‘The only thing wrong with my big brother, Charlie Brown, is his stupidity, his clumsiness, his inferiority and his lack of confidence.’’ With an endorsement like that, it’s no wonder Charlie has a self-image problem even though everyone assures him he is a good man. Charlie sets out to discover what it really means to be a good man and how he can become one. None of the cast is actually six years old, so the set and props are oversized to create the illusion they are smaller and younger. They speak to each other with the openness of that early childhood time and the action is episodic, creating a kind of a day in the life of Charlie Brown. The musical comedy, which is directed for Ballina Players by Mike Sheehan and Jaime Whittingham, was created in 1967 with music and lyrics by Clark Gesner.
