Director set to take on a favourite
task of directing Stephen Sondheim’s fairytale musical Into The Woods is a challenge Joshua McCann-Thomson has always wanted to take on. The upand-coming Gold Coast director is a big Sondheim fan. ‘‘His clever lyrics and unique compositions really stand out in the music theatre world,’’ says McCann-Thomson, who is joined by cast and crew at a Gold Coast Little Theatre ‘‘Drinks with the Director’’ evening ahead of the show’s opening. Into The Woods is an innovative portrayal of fairytales. Set in an enchanted library, the tuneful musical is for all ages although does showcase themes of death and magic. McCann-Thomson says the tales and Sondheim’s music made him eager to embrace the challenge of directing. He loves the memorable melodies of Into The Woods. ‘‘ Hello, Little Girl, Stay With Me and Ever After are the ones I can’t get out of my head,’’ he says. Narrator Cameron Rollo guides Gold Coast audiences as the Baker (Stephen Hirst) and his wife (Louise Harris) venture into the woods to lift the curse of childlessness imposed by a wicked witch (Jess Papst). Fairytale characters include Cinderella (Heidi Enchelmaier), Red Riding Hood (Kylie Loveday) and Rapunzel (Kimberly Rekers). Into The Woods plays Gold Coast Little Theatre, Southport, from February 2 to March 2.
