Grease gets a modern makeover
GREASE is the word in musical theatre land, with Aussie producer John Frost and London’s David Ian announcing the return of the popular show to the Australian stage.
Auditions will commence shortly for the multimillion-dollar production with Frost already on the lookout for the Danny and Sandy of today.
It is understood that Frost has some ‘‘surprise casting announcements’’ to be made in the coming weeks.
The musical is based on the 1978 film starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta and features all the popular hits, including You’re The One That I Want, Grease Is The Word, Summer Nights and Greased Lightnin’.
Frost has presented Grease as arena spectaculars twice before in Australia – once in 1998 and again in 2005, the latter starring John Farnham.
While the upcoming tour will be a scaled-down version in theatres, Frost said he was excited to be bringing back his most-requested musical of the Gordon Frost Organisation.
‘‘When the TV series Glee celebrated the music of Grease on one of their recent episodes, and Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta reunited for a charity Christmas album in December, I knew the time was right to bring Grease back to Australia,’’ he says.
