Nadine Garner plays Dr Blake’s receptionist and housekeeper Jean Beazley while Joel Tobeck ( Xena: Warrior Princess, Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King) is Chief Superintendent Matthew Lawson. The series is set in 1959 in rural Victoria.

McLachlan hopes The Doctor Blake Mysteries proves to be a turning point in his career, and he gets to return as Dr Blake for at least another season.

He says it would cement in the minds of Australian producers and casting agents that there is more to his acting skills than Henry, overalls and curls.

‘‘For someone who has had such a lengthy acting career you yearn for an opportunity for a meeting on one of those meatier roles,’’ he says.

‘‘You just hope audiences tune in and enjoy the show and fingers crossed we get to do a couple of more seasons.’’
