I Give it a Year
Australian export Rose Byrne pairs off with punchingabove-his-weight Brit Rafe Spall in this cut-above romantic comedy that charts the couple’s rocky first year of marriage.
They say: Mixed reviews, with the naysayers worried the film’s high quotient of spiky reality doesn’t sit right next to the funny bits.
Wesay: Directed by Dan Mazer ( Bruno) with enough edge and wit to set it well ahead of the rom-com pack. A skillful cast, all in on the joke, make I Give it A Year easy date fare. (Report, Page 11.) Running time 97 minutes. Pacific Fair, Australia, Robina, Coolangatta, Tweed City, The Arts Centre Gold Coast, Nerang, Harbour Town.
The Wachowksi siblings ( The Matrix, Speed Racer) team with German ace Tom Tykwer ( Run Lola Run, Perfume) for this ambitious anthology telling six interlocking stories across six time periods – from the 1800s to the distant future. Heavyweights Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent take multiple roles.
They say: Brilliant, epic, pretentious, unique, too many ideas, dazzling, too big, too this, too that – Cloud Atlas scored reviews across the spectrum.
Wesay: An enormous achievement that’s maybe more of an experience than a film (at least on initial viewing).
Cloud Atlas will divide audiences as either passionate devotees or frustrated head-scratchers. (Report, Page 12.) Running time 163 minutes. Nerang, Harbour Town, Robina, Pacific Fair, Australia Fair, Coolangatta.
Save Your Legs!
The members of a suburban cricket club up stumps and strike out on their dream tour of India in this easy-breezy Australian comedy starring David Lyons, Brendan Cowell and Stephen Curry. They say: Early reviews have mostly written off Save Your Legs! as an unambitious lark for cricket tragics. Wesay: A thoroughly not-bad little effort with, wisely, no obvious ambitions to set the world on fire. Directed by Boyd Hicklin (debut). (Report, Page 11.) Running time 91 minutes. Pacific Fair, Australia, Robina, Coolangatta, Tweed City, Harbour Town.
