Arts Centre Gold Coast’s 2013 subscription season launches on Monday night with a highly anticipated show by world-renowned New Zealand soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

Dame Kiri will be accompanied by her pianist, Terrence Dennis.

While she’s performed in opera houses around the world, Dame Kiri, 68, prefers one-off concerts and recitals these days.

‘‘For many years I enjoyed the drama and glamour of opera,’’ she says. ‘‘But . . . concerts and recitals give closer contact with an audience – which I much enjoy. Plus, the repertoire is my own choice, so I get to choose the songs and their stories that I want to sing. I enjoy that choice.’’

Dame Kiri’s warm, full lyric soprano voice has resulted in acclaim as one of the most beloved sopranos in both the US and Britain. Renowned for her superb technique, she has performed in multiple languages and is particularly associated with the works of Mozart, Strauss, Verdi, Handel and Puccini. ‘‘If you can sing Mozart properly, you can sing almost anything else,’’ she says.
