Thrones star sees Sydney
IT’S Michelle Fairley’s first time in Sydney and the Irish actress, star of HBO’s sweeping TV series Game of Thrones, is warmly praising her surroundings.
‘‘I’m just loving it, it’s such a beautiful city,’’ she says in her husky Celtic tones.
Clearly enjoying the warmth after flying in from a northern hemisphere winter, the actress who plays matriarch Catelyn Stark reels off a list of attractions she’s already taken in, although she’s been in the city only a couple of days.
‘‘What haven’t I seen would be more to the point,’’ she says, smiling.
In Australia to promote the DVD release of the sprawling saga that’s gained millions of fans and critical acclaim, Fairley says she’s still amazed by its success and by the dedication of its fans. ‘‘I love that people are passionate about it,’’ she says. ‘‘It is fascinating that people get so involved because as an actor you have to get involved, you have to immerse yourself in that world.’’
But Fairley says it’s not so hard for her to empathise with fans of the show as she’s had a similar experience herself when watching the critically acclaimed US crime drama The Wire.
‘‘That world seemed so . . . you could smell it, you could touch it almost,’’ she says.
‘‘I remember meeting some of the actors from that and I was ‘oooh, that’s Omar’. . . so I can understand it because I myself am a viewer as well.’’ is available from March 6.
