Meet Legally Blonde’s Lucy Durack.............................
S Australia’s leading lady of musical theatre, Lucy Durack, 30, knows all about having fun – and yes, it does depend on hair colour.
On the eve of the Brisbane premiere of her latest stage show, Legally Blonde, Durack says dazzling and dizzy are two different looks.
‘‘I’ve been a few colours in my lifetime and I can safely say that blondes have more fun. Yet more often than not people think that brunettes are smarter than blondes – or at least more serious,’’ Durack says.
Legally Blonde challenges the outdated stereotype that blondes can’t be smart as well as eye-catching.
Based on the 2001 romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, the musical recounts the story of Elle Woods, who pursues her ex boyfriend to Harvard Law School to prove her intelligence. There she encounters a colourful cast of characters who exceed all the obvious first impressions and teach Elle there is more to life than chasing lost love.
‘‘ Legally Blonde is about saying don’t judge a book by it’s cover and look deeper within because people will surprise you,’’ Durack says.
‘‘There’s always something else to be found and there certainly is in this show. It’s a lot of fun.’’
Durack resumes her long-time chemistry with costar Rob Mills, the pair sharing love stories twice in the award-winning Wicked! and the Cinderella musical Into The Woods. Durack says she pushed herself to the limits for
Legally Blonde by sticking to a tough regime of pilates and a strict diet. She sings 16 songs back-to-back and her only time out from the spotlight is for several rapid costume changes.
‘‘It is like a marathon. I don’t sit down once and there’s no room for toilet breaks and barely room to have a sip of water,’’ she says.
‘‘It’s really full on and I’ve never done anything like it but it’s a really exciting challenge. I’m loving it.’’
An avid fan of the original film, Durack has legal credentials to add to her acting skills, having started a law degree after she finished school – only that time her hair was dyed brown.
Legally Blonde plays the Lyric Theatre at QPAC, in Brisbane, from tonight until April 21.
