Delta singles out her mentor
Fate plays a key role in the success of a Delta Goodrem-Ryan Tedder double act, writes Darren Cartwright
DELTA Goodrem got the best of both worlds when prolific US singer and songwriter Ryan Tedder agreed to be a mentor on The Voice.
Goodrem got not only a highly credentialled offsider, she also had Tedder personally cut her latest single.
Tedder last year knocked back an offer from The Voice’s producers, as well as overtures from US and Europe talent shows, because of a hectic work schedule. He had dedicated 2013 to his band One Republic.
By coincidence, there was a one-week gap in his calendar that coincided with the The Voice’s ‘‘mentor’’ shooting schedule. That enabled Tedder to hook-up with The Voice and at the same time finish a collaboration with Goodrem. ‘‘It was fate that brought me here,’’ Tedder says. ‘‘I had one week off in three months and it was the same week they were taping ( The Voice).
‘‘Delta was going to cut it (the song) without me but this all happened and I was able to come across and do that with her and the show.’’ Tedder is one of four new mentors on The Voice. Sneaky Sound System lead singer Connie Mitchell assists Seal, Ben Lee is Joel Madden’s right-hand man and Jessica Mauboy teams with Ricky Martin.
Tedder, who has written for artists including Adele, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, had no plans to pen a song for the winner of The Voice.
‘‘We haven’t even discussed it and it would be impossible to determine what to write,’’ says Tedder.
‘‘It’s like making a custom-made size 10 shoe and whoever wins has to wear it.’’
As for collaborations, Tedder says it’s easier to write songs for artists than for his band One Republic.
He compared writing for an artist to a journalist ghostwriting a column or a book for someone else.
‘‘Much is made of the Adele album and clearly that stems from her personal experiences and for me she gave me all the fuel in the world,’’ Tedder says. ‘‘Beyonce – same deal.’’ ‘‘When I am writing for other people, I do not have to divulge anything about myself.’’
