Marais changes to Carlotta role
ACTRESS Jessica Marais will play Australian drag queen Carlotta in the telemovie based on the life of the Les Girls performer. The former Packed to the Rafters star joins a talented group of actors and performers cast that includes Alex Dimitriades, Caroline O’Connor and Paul Capsis in the ABC1 production. ABC TV head of fiction Carole Sklan says they’re thrilled Marais will play ‘‘the remarkable Carlotta’’. Considered a transgender pioneer in Australia, Carlotta has acted as a story consultant for the project and is delighted and flattered this story is being brought to the screen. ‘‘My main motivation is to show anyone who may be struggling with their gender, or struggling to gain acceptance from their family and society at large – that you can do it. Stand tall, know who you are and be proud of yourself, as acceptance comes from within,’’ Carlotta says. Carlotta tells the story of ‘‘confused teenager named Richard, his flight into the hedonistic Kings Cross of the 1960s and ’70s and his transformation into Carol’’, the the statement says. It has been described as a universal story about identity, family, tolerance and acceptance. Carlotta goes into production on May 6.
