Merry Men mix it up
FUNK, soul, hip-hop, rock and Latin are some of the sounds ‘‘party band’’ His Merry Men (pictured) will create at Bond University’s second Live at Bond event this weekend. Megan Crocombe fronts the 10-piece big band and says His Merry Men are likened to The Cat Empire and The Bamboos. ‘‘We are moving into a rock sound lately with a lot of guitar-driven stuff,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s just a bit of a party. We try to keep it fun. You have got a lot of personality on stage so there is always something exciting to work off.’’ The Brisbane-based band have been making music together since 2009. Crocombe says as well as making groovy tunes, His Merry Men love to put on a good show. ‘‘It’s usually difficult to cram 10 of us on stage. It can get hectic but it’s really fun,’’ she says. ‘‘You get something really different and out of the ordinary. We have a bit of a dance – there are a lot of co-ordinated dance moves the (four-piece) horn section does.’’ With all 10 members contributing to the band’s debut 2012 album Kind of Loud, its no wonder the end product is such a mishmash of genres. ‘‘There’s so much variety – from hard out funk, soul, surf rock or hip-hop flavours. There’s a bit of a Latin tune in there,’’ Crocombe says. She says His Merry Men did find it challenging to capture the band’s live energy on a record. ‘‘We ended up recording a lot of rhythm stuff together in a room,’’ she says. ‘‘That helped to keep the party vibes high.’’ His Merry Men will perform a special Queensland Pop Culture Week themed show at Bond, leading into the final night of the Gold Coast Film Festival. ‘‘We are going to venture into the costume territory – maybe Star Wars or Seinfeld, we aren’t sure yet,’’ Crocombe says.
