MATT Ward’s second outing of The Greenroom Project plays The Basement, at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, on Monday night. Ward has a sterling lineup of talent to showcase – Charne Louise ( Big Brother housemate 2012 and Dracula’s Theatre Restaurant star); Rebecca Grennan (from the ensemble of The Boy From Oz, with Hugh Jackman); Jaquelyn Pointing (Tracy Turnblad in Spotlight’s staging of Hairspray); Bianca De Zilva (the lead in last year’s staging of Fame by NAPA); and Matt Yates (from the ensemble of Ignatians Music Society’s Sweeney Todd,). The mentors are Yours Truly, Amanda Harrison ( Wicked, We Will Rock You, An Officer & a Gentleman) and Glenn T (professional theatre director, producer, character actor, playwright and film/TV production designer, with Brad Rush on baby grand piano. OPENING this week are Phoenix Ensemble’s Reefer Madness (from tomorrow until June 15); Spotlight’s The Drowsy Chaperone (from tomorrow until May 17 to June 8); Tugun Theatre’s Not Now Darling (from tonight until May 25); and Doublemask Youth Theatre Co’s Magic And Mysticism In Suburbia at Murwillumbh Civic Centre.
LOVERS of rock ’n roll will want to get along to A Sidesplitters’ Fundraiser at Broadbeach Bowls Club on May 25 from 7pm. Sidesplitters is a club for past and present male entertainers and musicians that regularly raises money for musos who have fallen on hard times. This bash will feature Catfish and The Deejays, a well-loved rock and roll outfit that has been playing the Gold Coast for some time. Catfish was the original drummer from Johnny O’Keefe’s band. The Jon Skye Band will also perform. Tickets are $8.
SPOTLIGHT’S raises the curtain on one of the best loved of contemporary musicals, The Drowsy Chaperone, tomorrow night. (See report, Page 7.) In the company’s tradition of presenting new and exciting productions, this is well worth seeing. Kelly Wight-Riker, daughter of local actress Val Cooney, played the lead female in a big production of the show in Las Vegas recently. KIM Reynolds has finalised the cast for her forthcoming production of the 1960s musical Hair at Spotlight. Well known local names in the show include Sean Curran, Scott Muller, Alana Tierney, Dave D’Arcy, Greta Brinsley, Clay English, Amy Church, Jess Purdy and Hayley Green. Award-winning choreographer Paolo Natividad is assistant choreographer.
THE July school holiday pantomime Snow White and The Seven Dwarves, presented by Top Hat Productions, began rehearsals this week and promises to be a blast!
