Spyndrift weave magic

The Gold Coast Bulletin - Play Magazine - - WHAT’S ON -

THEATRICAL, colourful, interactive and quirky – welcome to the world of Spyndrift (pictured). Genre-hopping between burlesque-groove, gypsy-folk, reggae, blues and ska, the Victorian quartet live for a good show. Eccentric frontwoman Elle Wood sets fire to her audience’s imagination with lavish costumes, vintage props and a shadow screen. ‘‘I want the audience to feel inspired,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s a passionate, feel-good show with good vibes. It’s infectious, people walk away feeling really good.’’ With a desire to bring another layer of depth to their music, Wood enjoys exploring visual components which other bands don’t touch on. ‘‘People are excited to see visuals with a band. Our show is so colourful, people love that change,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s engaging – people can’t resist the dancefloor. That’s the magic in music. I am such a supporter of live music. Seeing people create music in the moment. For us, we take it to the next level.’’ Spyndrift’s two albums, Soundswell and Positive Charge, attempted to capture the band’s live enchantment in a recording. ‘‘It was really hard to show the musical side without the visuals,’’ says Wood. ‘‘You have to see us live to get the real Spyndrift magic.’’ Wood says the quartet’s live show varies from dub-ska to circus-cabaret and is ‘‘full of imagination’’. ‘‘It’s very theatrical, upbeat and groovy,’’ she says. ‘‘One of our songs will take you back to early Paris. Another has some rocky, raunchy guitar grooves.’’ Mar Haze, The Loft: With Love Cannons, Take Me North and Josh Rennie-Hynes. Show at 8pm. Tickets $10.
