Mood is upbeat

The Gold Coast Bulletin - Play Magazine - - LIVE ’N’ LOUD -

ACCORDING to Andy ‘‘Akova’’ Kovacic what sets him apart from other one-manbands is his ability to create uplifting music. ‘‘It’s very up tempo,’’ says the Gold Coastbased musician. ‘‘There are no sad songs. Just life’s little messages. I talk to people, see what’s going on. They take their shoes off, relax, let their hair down and dance.’’ On stage, Akova switches between his vocals, guitars, cajon, djembe, ankle bells, ukulele, kazoo and percussion instruments. When Akova was told by a fan that he’s ‘‘the lovechild of Xavier Rudd and The Cat Empire’’, he felt it was a good way to explain the music he makes. ‘‘I don’t sound like anyone else,’’ he says. ‘‘It’s a solo act but it sounds as full on as The Cat Empire.’’

Akova and Dave Taylor play Mandala Organic Arts, Mermaid Beach, tomorrow night.
