In this bittersweet coming-of-age tale, an 11-year-old girl takes her first uneasy steps towards the realisation that the world is a chaotic place full of doubt and confusion after witnessing a violent confrontation between her neighbours. Tim Roth plays the girl’s father, with Cillian Murphy as an avuncular teacher. They say: Reviews were mostly strong, with the film’s frank depiction of English suburban malaise, gently uplifting narrative and central performance from young newcomer Eloise Laurence picked out for praise. Wesay: Topical and tasteful, Broken is a low-key winner from director Rufus Norris (UK theatre) and a very perceptive creative team. Although set in England, the film presents a slice of life relevant all around the first world. Also stars Robert Emms and Rory Kinnear. Running time 90 minutes. Screens at Cinemax Kingscliff.
