In this bittersweet com­ing-of-age tale, an 11-year-old girl takes her first un­easy steps to­wards the re­al­i­sa­tion that the world is a chaotic place full of doubt and con­fu­sion af­ter wit­ness­ing a vi­o­lent con­fronta­tion be­tween her neigh­bours. Tim Roth plays the girl’s fa­ther, with Cil­lian Mur­phy as an avun­cu­lar teacher. They say: Re­views were mostly strong, with the film’s frank de­pic­tion of English sub­ur­ban malaise, gen­tly up­lift­ing nar­ra­tive and cen­tral per­for­mance from young new­comer Eloise Lau­rence picked out for praise. Wesay: Top­i­cal and taste­ful, Bro­ken is a low-key win­ner from di­rec­tor Ru­fus Nor­ris (UK theatre) and a very per­cep­tive creative team. Al­though set in Eng­land, the film presents a slice of life rel­e­vant all around the first world. Also stars Robert Emms and Rory Kin­n­ear. Run­ning time 90 min­utes. Screens at Cine­max Kingscliff.
